India Wins 3 Gold, 2 Silver Medals at International Physics Olympiad 2025

New Delhi, July 25:

India has secured three gold and two silver medals at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2025, as announced by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR. The event was held in Paris, France, between July 18 and July 24.

The gold medal winners include Kanishk Jain from Pune, Maharashtra; Snehil Jha from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh; and Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The silver medals were won by Aagam Jignesh Shah from Surat, Gujarat, and Rajit Gupta from Kota, Rajasthan.

The Indian team was led by Prof Sitikantha Das from IIT Kharagpur and Vinayak Katdare, retired faculty from DG Ruparel College, Mumbai. They were accompanied by scientific observers Dr Amruta Sadhu of St Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and Dr Vivek Lohani of Robert Bosch GmbH, Germany.

The International Physics Olympiad is one of the most prestigious global competitions for pre-university students, testing both theoretical and experimental skills in Physics.

In the country-wise medal tally, India secured fifth position, jointly with Taiwan, Japan, and Russia (participating under the Olympiad flag). The USA ranked first with five gold medals, while South Korea, China, and Hong Kong jointly held second position with four gold and one silver medal each.

A total of 415 students from 87 countries participated, with five more countries joining as observers — making it one of the largest IPhOs to date.

This marks India’s 26th participation at the International Physics Olympiad. Over the years, Indian students have consistently performed well — with nearly 42% winning gold, another 42% winning silver, 11% bronze, and 5% earning honourable mentions. Notably, in the past decade, every Indian participant at IPhO has returned with a medal: 58% with gold and 42% with silver.

Meanwhile, India also delivered strong performances in other international Olympiads:

  • At the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025 held in Sunshine Coast, Australia, the six-member Indian team won 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze, securing 7th position out of 110 participating countries. The team achieved a record score of 193 out of 252, the highest ever by India in IMO history.
  • At the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Dubai from July 5 to 14, the Indian team clinched 2 gold and 2 silver medals, placing 6th overall among 90 participating nations.

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is the nodal agency for the training and selection of Indian teams for Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astronomy.

India’s consistent success in global Olympiads is a testament to the dedication of its students, teachers, and national academic institutions.
